(01-06-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team narrowly fell 50-51 to the nationally ranked No. 19 Bentley University Falcons Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. With the loss, UNH falls to 1-11 overall and 1-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Falcons improve to 11-2 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
The Chargers quickly found themselves down Wednesday night to the nationally ranked Falcons. Bentley opened the game with an 18-5 run to take a 13-point lead after six minutes of play. UNH cut into the lead throughout the first half, but trailed 32-22 at the break.
Kingsley Aguh entered into the lineup at halftime and helped turn around the game for UNH. The sophomore helped spark the UNH defense which in turn helped lead the Chargers on a 16-5 run during the opening 10 minutes of the second half. After exchanging a number of baskets, Bentley eventually took a four-point lead with 3:38 left in the half.
UNH senior Cassius Chaney then connected on a non-traditional three-point play to bring the Chargers within one with 2:44 remaining. After two turnovers the Falcons made a pair of free throws to take a three-point lead at the 1:26 mark. Chaney connected on another pair of free throws to cut the lead back to one with 1:10 remaining. The UNH defense forced a Bentley three-pointer to bounce out with 39 seconds remaining and the Chargers had the ball with 21 seconds left in the second half. After a UNH timeout, Kelvin Jackson hit a layup to put the Chargers ahead with 13 seconds on the clock. The Falcons then took the ball down the court and hit a layup which sealed the win with 4.7 seconds left. Chaney did attempt a three-pointer which came up short as time expired.
The Chargers shot 33.3 percent from the floor, 14.3 percent from three-point range and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe. After hitting over 40 percent from the floor in the first half, Bentley connected on only 16.7 percent in the second half, for a game total of 32.0 percent. They shot 18.2 percent from downtown and 83.3 percent from the foul line.
Chaney led all scorers with 26 points on 10-21 from the floor. He added 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Jackson and Robert Jamerson each added eight points and 10 rebounds for the Chargers.
