(01-06-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team fell 84-69 Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. With the loss the Chargers fall to 7-6 and 5-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Falcons improve to 8-5 overall and 6-2 in the NE-10.
In the first half, the Chargers jumped out to a four-point lead at the 16:48 mark, on a layup by freshman Jill Baranager. UNH held their biggest lead of the half, 21-16, at the 10:09 mark on a layup from Olivia DeMarco. Bentley continued to attack the Charger defense, and tied the game at the 4:51 mark and maintained the lead for the remainder of the half. The Falcons took their biggest lead into halftime, 37-43, on a last second layup by Kim Brennan.
Leading UNH for the half was senior point guard Helin Marte with 11 points and four assists. Baranger tallied eight points and four rebounds for the Chargers. New Haven shot 57.1 percent from the floor, but only 12.5 percent from beyond the arc. Bentley shot 56.3 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from the three-point line.
Bentley continued to attack the Chargers in the second half. The Falcons pushed their lead to 15 at the 13:03 mark. The Chargers fought their way back, cutting the Falcons lead to just nine on a layup from DeMarco at the 11:24 mark. The Falcons held at least a nine-point lead for the remainder of the game. However, UNH kept attacking the Falcon’s with back to back layup’s from Marte. Bentley made six free throws at the end of the game to give them the 69-84 win.
For the game, Marte had a career-high 24 points, six rebounds, seven assists and five steals. DeMarco added 12 points. The Chargers shot 44.4 percent from the floor, but only 11.1 percent from beyond the arc.
