LOWELL, Mass. – After a terrific stretch of three straight wins in overtime, the University of New Haven women’s soccer team was defeated by UMass-Lowell on Sunday afternoon by the final score of 1-0. The Riverhawks broke the deadlock in the 78th minute of play, handing the Chargers their first loss in the month of October.
With the loss New Haven dropped to 6-5-2 overall and 4-4-2 in NE-10 competition. The Riverhawks, now 6-5-1 overall and 6-4 in the league, move two wins ahead of the Chargers and into sole possession of seventh place.
The first half of action featured an uneventful match, dominated by defense on both ends of the pitch. UMass-Lowell edged New Haven in shots (4-2) and corner kicks (1-0) but neither team was able to find the back of the net. At the sound of the halftime whistle, the teams remained tied at 0-0.
After the break in action, UMass-Lowell picked up the pace of play on New Haven’s half, generating an 8-1 advantage in shots. In the 78th minute the Riverhawks took advantage of a throw in on the Chargers’ half, resulting in a breakaway goal. Keanna Santos’ sixth goal of the season proved to be the difference, giving UNH its third loss on the road this season.
Kim Taylor was stellar in net, blocking three shots in 90 minutes of play. Her counterpart, Miceala Butlin, was equally as good, also registering three saves.
New Haven returns to action on Wednesday, October 13th for a conference showdown against No. 1 nationally ranked Saint Rose. Game time is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
