Women's Volleyball Falls to No. 22 Dowling in Non-Conference Match

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women’s volleyball team’s 11 game winning streak came to an end on Wednesday night, as the Chargers dropped a four-set match (25-20, 25-18, 15-25, 25-20) to Dowling College at Chargers Gymnasium. With the loss UNH falls to 14-2 on the season, while the nationally ranked No. 22 Golden Lions improve to 15-0 on the season.

Wednesday night was the Charger Dig Pink Night at Charger Gymnasium. The team sported new pink jersey's and helped promote breast cancer awareness through an information table and giveaways throughout the match.

The first set of the match featured a strong start for the visiting Golden Lions. After the two teams exchanged points early on, Dowling began to pull away when they grasped a 15-10 lead. The Chargers fought back but could not overcome the deficit, dropping game one by the final score of 25-20. The Chargers tallied eight kills and seven errors on 42 attempts in the frame.

In game two Dowling jumped out to an 8-3 lead but failed to sustain the advantage. The Chargers battled back and trailed by just one minutes later at 10-11. However another surge by the Golden Lions left New Haven with a deficit that it could not prevail over. Dowling captured the second game of the match by the final score of 25-18. The Chargers hammered eight kills and only three errors on 29 attempts in the set.

Game three revealed that the Chargers were not going to go down without a fight. New Haven fell behind early but raced ahead into the lead at 14-9 and never looked back. The Chargers slammed nine kills and only three errors on 30 attempts en route to a 25-15 victory. The Golden Lions also helped out, committing eight errors in the game.

The fourth set of the night featured a back and forth start, eventually leading to a tie score at 10-10. However the momentum shifted to the away team as the Golden Lions recorded the next five points. The Chargers chipped away at their deficit but could not overcome Dowling’s advantage. The Golden Lions took the final game by the final score of 25-19.

Sara Malmlov led the way offensively as the senior registered 10 kills and five errors on 34 total attempts. Keidy Candelaria collected eight kills and nine digs while Heather Ladao chimed in with a team-high 15 digs. Chelsey Alpough handed out 29 assists for the Chargers.

The Chargers return to action on Friday, October 15 with a home game against UMass-Lowell. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Chargers Gymnasium.
