WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Austin Coleman scored his first goal of the season on Saturday afternoon, as the University of New Haven men’s soccer team knocked off Saint Anselm College by the final score of 1-0 at Kayo Field. The Chargers kept their playoff hopes alive with the triumph.

The first half of play featured a scoreless stalemate between to the two squads. New Haven captured a slight advantage in shots (5-4) and corner kicks (3-2) but failed to reach the scoreboard. Joseph D’Antonio created the game’s best chance with eight minutes left in the half. D’Antonio beat two defenders down the right side of the pitch and ripped a shot with his left foot to the far post. The blast seemed to be heading to the corner but sailed just wide and out for a goal kick. At the sound of the halftime whistle, the score remained knotted up at 0-0.
After the break in action both teams buckled down offensively, eventually leading to the game’s first goal. Deep in Hawks territory, the Chargers earned a throw-in from the left side of the field. Hector Pommills picked up the ball and launched a service into the middle of the penalty area. Austin Coleman freed himself from a defender and deflected a shot with his head and into the goal for a 1-0 lead.
For the remaining 25 minutes of play, defense was the name of the game for the Chargers. J.J. Comeau and the New Haven defense kept the visiting Hawks and their 11 second half shots off of the scoreboard. Comeau made five saves between the posts and was credited with his first clean sheet of the season.
New Haven returns to action on Thursday, October 21 when the team hits the road to take on NYIT. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
