Volleyball Earns 10th Conference Win of the Season

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated American International College 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-15) Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. The win marks the team's 10th Northeast-10 Conference win of the season, while improving to 17-2 overall. The Yellow Jackets fall to 14-9 overall and 5-4 in conference play.

The Chargers used a balanced attack in the opening set, eventually capturing a 25-18 victory. New Haven recorded 12 kills on 36 attempts from six different players. Elizabeth Akinbiyi (Miami Gardens, Fla.) led the way with three kills and two errors on eight total attempts.

Game two featured a quick start for the Chargers, followed by an offensive surge from the Yellow Jackets. With the score tied at 10-10, the two teams battled back and forth until the score was tied at 24-24. After a timeout by the home team, a kill by Sara Malmlov (Lindesberg, Sweden) and an AIC error granted the Chargers a 26-24 triumph. New Haven collected 13 kills and five errors on 36 total attempts in the set.

The third and final game of the night was very one sided, as the Chargers pulled away midway through the set. New Haven opened up a 21-14 lead and never looked back, extending their conference winning streak to 25 games. UNH collected a match-high 14 kills with only two errors on 29 attempts.

Tymika Duncan (Trinidad, West Indies) led the offensive attack with eight kills and one error on 12 total attempts (.583 hitting percentage). Malmlov chipped in nine kills and three errors on 30 total attempts, while Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif.) added seven kills and handed out 30 assists. Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif.) registered a team-high 12 digs and Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, P.R.) hammered home six kills and three aces.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday, October 23 with their annual alumni game. First serve is set for 10 a.m. at Chargers Gymnasium.
