WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Kim Taylor stopped a career-high 14 shots and Lucy Francisco scored an unassisted goal in the 18th minute to propel the University of New Haven women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Kayo Field Wednesday afternoon in its regular season finale. With the win, the Chargers improve to 9-7-2 overall and 7-6-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Adelphi fell to 8-7-1 overall and 8-7 in conference play.
The first half featured several scoring chances, more so from the visiting Panthers. However in the 18th minute of play, the Chargers opened the scoring column with the game’s first goal. Francisco collected the ball at the top of the 18 yard box and laced a shot to the lower right corner for the 1-0 lead. Francisco’s tally was the sixth of the 2010 campaign.
Adelphi picked up the pressure midway through the stanza, but Taylor recorded nine first half saves to maintain the advantage. As the halftime whistle sounded, the Chargers carried a 1-0 lead into the locker rooms.
For most of the second half, Adelphi pounded New Haven’s goal. The Panthers recorded 10 shots, including five shots on goal in the second half. Taylor made a diving save in the 65th minute, followed by another pair in the 86th and 87th minutes. The Panthers also hit the crossbar in the 84th minute as they fired shots at the UNH net.
In total, Adelphi outshot UNH 24-6. The Panthers recorded four corner kicks, compared to five by the Chargers. Francisco and Emily Buckley-Matura each recorded two shots for the Chargers.
Depending on other NE-10 results on Wednesday afternoon and evening, New Haven will look to grab one of the final two spots in the NE-10 Women’s Soccer Championship which starts on Sunday, October 31. The Chargers will earn a berth to the tournament if Southern Connecticut loses or ties the College of Saint Rose, or if UMass Lowell loses or ties Assumption. If both teams win, the Chargers will miss the tournament.
