Men’s Soccer Nears Upset Bid at No. 16 Merrimack, Falls Short In Overtime, 2-1

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Senior Matt Sarrazin scored his first goal of the season, but the University of New Haven men’s soccer team was defeated in overtime by No. 16 nationally ranked Merrimack College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Chargers dropped to 4-7-1 overall and 3-7 in Northeast-10 Conference competition.

It took 44 minutes of soccer before Sarrazin and the Chargers’ offense opening the scoring column in North Andover, Mass. With just seconds remaining in the half, Andres Nunez found Sarrazin who slammed home the game’s first goal. UNH carried a 1-0 advantage into the locker rooms at halftime.

After the intermission the Chargers’ defense played tough and kept the Merrimack offense off the scoreboard. However in the 83rd minute of play, the Warriors’ Olof Lindhe broke through and netted the equalizer. Neither team could find the back of the net in the closing minutes, sending the two teams into overtime.

Five minutes into the first extra period, Merrimack broke through for a second time and beat J.J. Comeau for the thrilling triumph. Franklin Pena received a pass from Robbie Sabadoz for his sixth goal of the campaign.

Comeau was solid in net making 10 saves in the losing effort. Kevin Joyce did not register a save for the hosting Warriors.
