Golden Knights Push Past Chargers in Second Half

(02-17-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team fell 64-59 to the College of Saint Rose Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers fall to 12-13 overall and 10-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Golden Knights improve to 14-11 overall and 13-7 in the NE-10.

New Haven jumped out to an early five-point lead at the 16:30 mark on a layup from Dominique Stellmacher. The Golden Knights and the Chargers continued to exchange baskets until the 9:53 mark, when UNH went up by seven, 19-12 on a lay-up from Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty. Saint Rose came back and tied the game, 23-23, with 5:31 left in the half. To close the half, both teams continued to be evenly matched as the game was tied three more times before halftime. The game was tied 34-34 going into halftime.

Stellmacher led UNH with 14 first-half points. Senior guard Helin Marte added 5 points and 5 assists. The Chargers shot 45.2 percent from the floor.

New Haven opened the second half on a quick layup from Marte. At the 16:06 mark, the Golden Knights went up by four, 38-42. The Chargers fought back with back-to-back three-pointers from Stellmacher. St. Rose climbed their way back finding itself up by as many as nine, 48-57, with 8:46 left in the game. UNH then went on a 7-2 run over the next four minutes cutting the Saint Rose lead to four at the 4:48 mark. Saint Rose kept at least a four-point lead for the remainder of the game.

Stellmacher led all scorers with 22 points. Marte recorded 13 points, nine assists, and six rebounds. Freshman Jill Baranger also played well for the Chargers tallying eight points and seven rebounds.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday, February 20 when they host Pace University at Charger Gymnasium. Saturday is senior night for the Chargers who play their last regular season home game. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
