Setters Outlast Chargers' Last Minute Surge

(02-20-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team fell 56-60 Saturday afternoon to Pace University at Charger Gymnasium. With the loss New Haven falls to 12-14 overall and 10-11 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Setters improve to 20-6 overall and 17-4 in the NE-10.

The Chargers opened the game on a jumper from senior Lindsay Salt. The Setters later tied the game at the 15:43 mark on a jumper from Maral Javadifar. UNH then took a seven-point lead with 12:11 left in the half on a three-pointer from Dominique Stellmacher. At the 7:31 mark, New Haven went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes. After a Setters' score near the three-minute mark, both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the half and the Chargers held a 31-25 lead.

Stellmacher led the Chargers with 13 first-half points, while freshman Jill Baranger tallied seven points. The Chargers shot 36.4 percent from the field, while the Setters' shot 42.9 percent.

The Setters' opened the second half with back-to-back layups, cutting the Charger lead to just two, 31-29. Pace continued to attack the Chargers tying the game at 35-35 with 16:21 left. The Chargers fought their way back, taking a four-point lead on a three-pointer from Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty. Pace continued to play aggressively taking an eight-point lead, 49-57, with 4:04 remaining.  New Haven went on a 7-0 run over the next three minutes, to find itself within one, 56-57, with 47 seconds left. However, New Haven came up short with Pace hitting three free-throws down the stretch to seal the four-point win.

Stellmacher led all scorers with 27 points. She also recorded six rebounds. Senior Helin Marte tallied eight points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

The Chargers return to action Wednesday, February 24 when they travel to Adelphi to play their last regular season game. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. Should the Chargers win they will secure the eighth seed in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship tournament which starts on Sunday, February 28. A win will also secure a home postseason game for the Chargers.
