WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team fell 86-91 Monday night to Merrimack College at Charger Gymnasium. With the loss New Haven falls to 5-21 overall, while the Warriors improve to 18-7.
The Chargers scored the first two baskets of Monday night's game, but found themselves behind in the opening minutes. Merrimack went on a 6-0 run to take a 6-2 lead and led until Kingsley Aguh connected on a layup with 13:14 left in the first half to give the Chargers a one point lead. The Warriors answered with a run which eventually put them up by as many as 14 points, 33-19, with just under eight minutes left in the half. Fueled by three-pointers from junior Robert Jamerson, UNH rallied with a 20-7 run to close the half, cutting Merrimack's lead to one at the break, 39-40.
New Haven came out and took the lead back in the second half, with three layups in the first three minutes the Chargers took a three point lead, 45-42. The Warriors, however, would once again go on a scoring spree and took the lead back minutes later. Leading by as many as 11 points in the second half, Merrimack did see its lead shrink in the final minutes. The Chargers tied the score at 80-80 with 3:40 left, but the Warriors prevailed with clutch free throws in the closing minute.
Jamerson led the Chargers with 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting, including four three-pointers. Senior Cassius Chaney added a double-double with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Kelvin Jackson also scored in double figures with 12 points.
The Chargers shot 52.3 percent from the floor and 46.2 percent from downtown. Merrimack forced 15 turnovers and was held to just eight. UNH held a slight 40-35 edge in rebounds.
New Haven will conclude the 2009-10 season on Wednesday night when they travel to Adelphi University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
