Chargers Beat Panthers and Earn 8th Seed in NE-10 Tourney

(02-24-10) GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team clinched the eighth seed and a home game in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship tournament with a 66-56 victory over Adelphi University Wednesday night. With the win the Chargers improve to 13-14 overall and 11-11 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Panthers fall to 4-23 overall and 1-21 in conference play.

Just 10 minutes into the game, the Chargers jumped out to an 11-point lead, 18-7. The Panthers would answer, cutting the UNH lead to just two points, 28-26, at the 2:29 mark of the first half. Junior Dominique Stellmacher scored back-to-back layups to give the Chargers a six-point halftime lead.

After keeping it close through the first minutes of the second half, the Chargers took another double figure lead just over four minutes into the half. New Haven opened a 17-point, 60-43, lead with 4:13 left in the half. A 7-0 Adelphi run closed the game and the Chargers' gap to ten, 66-56.

Nicole Pollard scored a team-high 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including a trio of three-pointers. Helin Marte scored 12 points and a team-high eight points.

The Chargers shot nearly 50 percent from the floor and 46.2 percent from three-point territory. The Chargers also recorded five blocks, including three by Stellmacher.

With the win, the Chargers finished eighth in the NE-10 this season. With 12 teams qualifying for the NE-10 Championship tournament and the top four receiving a first round bye, the Chargers were the final team to earn a home game in the first round of the championship. With other results from Wednesday night, Southern Connecticut State University slipped into ninth position and will travel to Charger Gymnasium on Sunday. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m. The winner of Sunday's game will advance to take on the top seed and nationally ranked No. 2 Franklin Pierce University.
