(02-05-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team defeated the visiting Southern Connecticut State University Owls 73-58 Saturday afternoon. With the win the Chargers improve to 11-11 overall and 9-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The visiting Owls fall to 11-11 overall and 8-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
SCSU opened up the game strong taking a five-point lead early. UNH quickly came back taking the lead at the 16:39 mark on a layup by Dominique Stellmacher. SCSU then went on a 17-4 run to take a nine-point lead at the 9:31 mark. UNH Freshman Jasmine Hardy then hit two three-pointers to bring the Chargers within five, 23-28. SCSU responded with back-to-back layups from LaTisha Hatcher to regain a nine-point lead. UNH closed the half on a 6-0 run, cutting the SCSU to just two, 33-35.
Hardy led the Chargers for the half with nine points. Senior guard Helin Marte added five assists. UNH forced 14 SCSU turnovers and the Chargers shot 43.8 percent from the floor.
New Haven opened the second half strong, and with an 8-0 run, took a six-point lead. The Chargers kept attacking the SCSU defense and found themselves up 14, 56-42, after a layup from Marte. The Owls cut their way back and put the New Haven lead at nine with 5:51 left. Stellmacher answered for the Chargers hitting two three-pointers and bringing the UNH lead back up to 17, 66-49. The Chargers hit seven free-throws in the last two minutes of the game to seal their 11th win of the season, 73-58.
UNH had four players in double figure. Stellmacher led UNH with 17 points, while Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty and Hardy had 13 a piece. Marte narrowly missed a triple-double with 15 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. For the game, the Chargers shot 49.0 percent from the floor and 40.0 percent from behind the arc.
The Chargers are back in action Tuesday, February 9 when they travel to Assumption College. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
