(02-06-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team defeated Southern Connecticut State University 62-47 Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. With the win New Haven breaks its six-game losing streak and improves to 3-18 overall and 3-14 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Southern Connecticut State falls to 2-20 overall and 1-16 in the NE-10.
The Owls scored the first points in the opening minute, but UNH answered and took a five-point lead, 12-7 off a Darryl Greene free throw at the 14:35 mark. SCSU tied the game minutes later, and took a two point lead after a 7-0 run with 11:13 left in the first half. After regaining the lead, the Chargers held it for the rest of the half and led by as many at nine points, 28-19, with 1:35 left. Three SCSU points before halftime cut the UNH lead to six, 28-22, at the break.
The Chargers jumped out to a 10-point lead, 35-25, six minutes into the second half when Robert Jamerson connected from long-range. New Haven maintained a double-figure lead for the remainder of the second half, holding off numerous SCSU runs. UNH led by as many as 16 points at the 9:39 mark, while the Owls got no closer than 10 points at the 6:29 mark. The Chargers secured the win down the stretch with defense and held a 62-47 lead as the game concluded.
The Chargers held a 22-7 advantage in points off 17 SCSU turnovers. New Haven also held a 26-10 advantage in points in the paint and a 17-7 advantage in second chance points. UNH shot 44.9 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from downtown, while the Owls were held to 29.1 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from three-point range.
Jamerson finished with a team-high 19 points, while adding five rebounds and two seals. Cassius Chaney scored 18 points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season. Kelvin Jackson scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds as well.
The Chargers are back on the court on Tuesday, February 9 when they travel to Assumption College. Game time in Worchester, Mass. is set for 7: 30 p.m.
