(02-09-10) WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team went on a 6-0 run in the final minute of Tuesday night's game at Assumption College and took a 71-68 win. The Chargers improve to 4-18 overall and 4-14 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Greyhounds fall to 11-12 overall and 8-10 in the NE-10.
New Haven and Assumption exchanged the lead a number of times in the opening 10 minutes of the first half. With 8:29 left in the half, the Greyhounds took the lead and pulled out to a nine-point lead with 1:22 left in the half. The Chargers cut the lead to 35-28 with a bucket before the half. The Greyhounds were helped with 11 points off turnovers and 19 bench points in the first half.
After opening a 10-point lead in the first minutes of the second half, Assumption would see its lead diminish midway through the second half. Over the final five minutes the teams exchanged the lead, while Assumption took a three-point lead off a jumper with 1:20 left. Just 31-seconds later, senior Cassius Chaney connected from long range to tie the score at 58-58. The Greyhounds ensuing three-point attempt failed and Darryl Greene went down the court and connected on a pair of three throws to put the Chargers up by two. After another Assumption missed three-pointer, the Greyhounds had a chance to tie the game with an offensive rebound, but the Chargers forced a turnover with one second remaining. Kelvin Jackson was good on one of two free throws to give UNH the three-point win.
The Chargers were led by 21 points from Greene, while Jackson added 19 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. Robert Jamerson scored 12 points and grabbed eight boards.
