WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s basketball team will continue its postseason play Tuesday night when they take on nationally ranked No. 2 Franklin Pierce in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship quarterfinals. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Fieldhouse on the Franklin Pierce University campus.
No. 8 New Haven advances to the quarterfinal game after a win over No. 9 Southern Connecticut State University Sunday afternoon, 81-65. The Chargers enter into Tuesday night’s game with a 14-14 overall record and 11-11 in the NE-10. Joining the NE-10 prior to the 2008-09 season, the Chargers have advanced to the quarterfinals each of the last two seasons.
Ticket prices for the tournament game are $7 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, and $1 for children and college students with an ID.
New Haven is led by Second Team All-Conference junior guard
Dominique Stellmacher (New Britain, Conn./New Britain ), averaging 13.8 ppg and 6.0 rpg. Senior point guard
Helin Marte (Woodhaven, N.Y./Richmond Hill ) has been running the UNH offense all year long, which posted a season-high 81 points in Sunday’s first round game. Recently named the NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year, Marte is averaging 11.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 2.0 steals per game. In the win over Southern, she reached the 500 assist mark, dishing out 506 assists in her career.
The freshman duo of
Jill Baranger (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe ) and
Olivia DeMarco (Watervliet, N.Y./Catholic Central) have been big contributors in their first season with the Chargers. Baranger is third on the team in scoring with 8.1 points per game. She also has a team-high 41 blocks and is grabbing 5.9 rebounds per game. DeMarco is averaging 6.5 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game.
Nicole Pollard (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case ) put up big numbers in the Chargers first round tournament game, pouring in a season-high 22 points. She was 6-of-10 from the floor and was perfect at the charity stripe (8-of-8). Yamin Ithier-Vicenty also played well for the Chargers Sunday afternoon with 13 points, eight rebounds and six steals.
Franklin Pierce and New Haven met back on January 12th, with the Ravens defeating the Chargers 65-52, in the regular season match-up. Franklin Pierce is led by NE-10 Player of the Year Johannah Leedham with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Stellmacher led the Chargers with 18 points and seven rebounds.
