LeGoff Scores Game-Winner in Second Overtime of Season Opener

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team opened the 2010 season in dramatic fashion when Sarah LeGoff (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) scored the game-winning goal with just over 30-seconds left in the second overtime period against Rollins College in Florida. The Chargers open the season with a win, while Rollins falls to 3-3.

Rollins and the Chargers played a fairly evenly matched game for most of the evening. The teams exchanged goals until Laura McLean (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue Point) broke the streak and put UNH up 4-2 with 9:36 left in the opening half. The Chargers held a 7-5 lead at the half.

Through the first few minutes of the second half, New Haven used a 6-0 swing to take a 13-7 lead with 7:41 left. Rollins answered with its own 6-0 run in the final seven minutes to force overtime.

Freshman Natalie Lieberman (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) scored with 1:13 left in the first overtime, giving the Chargers a one-point lead. Rollins once again answered with 33-seconds left, evening the scored at 14-14. The score remained tied, which force a second and final overtime period. Ashley Ferrandiz (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) was first to score for the Chargers in the second overtime, with 1:39 left on the clock. Rollins quickly answered at the 1:15 mark, once again evening the score. LeGoff then scored the game-winner on an unassisted goal with 32-seconds remaining in the second overtime. The Chargers' defense then held on to grab the victory in the 2010 season opener.

Ferrandiz led the Chargers with five goals and two assists. LeGoff scored two and handed out two, while Lieberman and McLean each added three scores. Maureen Spellman (Trumbull, Conn./Saint Joseph) was in the net for UNH and posted 15 saves on 30 shots.

The Chargers return to action against Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday morning. The game will also take place in Winter Park, Fla. on the campus of Rollins College. Game time is 10:30 a.m.
