WINTER PARK, Fla. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated Franklin Pierce University 13-7 Wednesday morning in the team's 2010 Northeast-10 Conference season opener. The game was played on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. The Chargers improve to 2-0 overall, while the Ravens fall to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10.
Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Chargers then scored three straight to open a lead with just under 20-minutes remaining in the first half. UNH then saw its lead disappear as the Ravens scored four-straight and took a 6-3 lead midway through the first half. The Chargers answered with shutdown defense and
Ashley Ferrandiz (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville). The junior scored four-straight, including three free position shots, to put UNH up 7-6 with 4:18 left in the first half.
Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie) and Ferrandiz each added additional goals before halftime, giving the Chargers a 9-6 halftime lead.

Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and
Laura McLean (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue Point) put the Chargers up 13-6 with 49-seconds remaining. The Lions cut New Haven's lead to six by adding a score in the final 30-seconds.
Ferrandiz finished with a game-high seven goals on 10 shots. Magnone added three goals and one assist for UNH.
Natalie Lieberman (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and McLean also had multi-point outings.
Maureen Spellman (Trumbull, Conn./Saint Joseph) led the New Haven defense with six ground balls and nine saves on 16 shots on net.
The Chargers return to New England and take on Dowling College on Sunday, March 21. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Oakdale, N.Y.
