No. 7 Dowling Hands No. 8 Chargers First Loss of '10

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - The nationally ranked No. 8 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team fell 15-14 Sunday afternoon to No. 7 Dowling College. The loss was the first of 2010 for the Chargers who drop to 2-1 on the season. The Golden Lions improve to 3-1 overall.

After back-to-back goals gave the Chargers a 4-2 lead, the Golden Knights scored two straight an tied the game at 4-4 just over 15 minutes into the first half. Another two from Dowling put the Chargers down 6-4 with 10:59 left in the first half. The Chargers answered with two scores later in the half, but Dowling once again pulled ahead after a 4-0 run. Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie) added a free position goal with 24-seconds left in the first half to bring the score to 10-7 at halftime.

Magnone added another goal which opened the second half and brought UNH within two, 10-8. The teams then exchanged points until Magnone sparked a 3-0 Chargers run with 10:52 left. Sarah LeGoff (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) capped the spree and cut the Chargers deficit to one, 14-13. Dowling added one more goal before Magnone capped the Chargers afternoon with her fifth of the game at the 38-second mark.

The Chargers held a 22-16 advantage in ground balls and a 32-28 advantage in shots.

After Magnone's five goals, Ashley Ferrandix led the Chargers with three goals and three assists. LeGoff scored three and handed out two assists, while Carolina Marrero (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) added two goals.

The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, March 24 at Molloy College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
