Women's Lacrosse Falls in Non-Conference Match to Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team lost 14-12 Wednesday afternoon to Molloy College on Long Island. With the loss the Chargers fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Lions improve to 4-1 this season.

In the first half, the Chargers jumped out to a two-point lead after 12 minutes. Molloy answered with two goals of its own, tying the score at 2-2 with 14:56 left in the first half. Back-to-back goals by Sarah LeGoff (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) gave UNH a 4-2 lead minutes later. The Lions rebounded with a 4-0 run, taking a 6-4 lead with 6:38 remaining. Laura McLean (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue Point) scored a pair of goals to even the score at 6-6, but Molloy scored another before halftime and led 7-6 at the break.

The Lions took a four-point lead with 21:16 left in the second half after scoring three straight to open the half. The Chargers once again cut back into the Molloy lead with two goals in the 40th and 42nd minutes. The teams continued to exchange points before the Lions took the two-point victory.

McLean led the Chargers with five goals. LeGoff, Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie) and Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) each scored two goals, while LeGoff added two assists. Between the posts, Maureen Spellman (Trumbull, Conn./Saint Joseph) stopped 11 shots for the Chargers.

The Chargers held an advantage in shots and ground balls, but the Lions led in draw controls.

The Chargers open their 2010 home schedule on Saturday, March 27 at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
