WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team fell to Stonehill 17-6, in their 2010 home opener Saturday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10, while Stonehill improves to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10.
The Chargers scored the first two goals in the opening 11 minutes of the first half. The Skyhawks scored their first in the 12th minute, but
Laura McLean (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue Point) scored a free position shot with 13:18 left in the first half to put UNH up 3-1. The teams exchanged points before the Skyhawks went on a 5-0 run to close the first half. The Chargers trailed 7-4 at the half.
Stonehill continued its scoring spree with three goals to open the second half.
Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie) scored with 14:15 left in the second half to cut the Stonehill lead to 10-5. The Skyhawks clinched their first NE-10 win of the season by scoring eight of the final nine goals and taking the 17-6 victory.
The Chargers struggled to gain possession of the ball off the draw throughout the game on Saturday. UNH trailed 15-9 in draw controls, including a 9-3 deficit in the second half. The Chargers also trailed 33-16 in shots.
Magnone and
Sarah LeGoff (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) led the Chargers with two goals each. LeGoff added an assist, while
Laura McLean (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue Point) and
Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) added one goal each. Between the posts for UNH
Maureen Spellman (Trumbull, Conn./Saint Joseph) stopped 10 shots.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, March 31 when they host C.W. Post at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
