Lieberman Leads Chargers to 17-10 Win in Regular Season Finale

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated American International College 17-10 Wednesday afternoon in the team's final regular season game of the 2010 season. With the win, the Chargers improve to 7-8 overall and 6-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference and secure the sixth seed in next week's NE-10 women's lacrosse quarterfinals.

Through the opening 15-minutes of the first half, the two teams each scored three points. AIC then went ahead with a score at the 12:23 mark. Back-to-back goals by UNH freshman Natalie Lieberman (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) gave the Chargers back in the lead. The two teams once again exchanged four goals in the final nine minutes of the first half as the Chargers secured a 7-6 halftime lead.

Lieberman added another in the opening minute of the second half and gave the Chargers a 8-6 lead. After two unanswered AIC goals the Chargers scored nine straight to take a commanding 17-8 lead. Senior Sarah LeGoff (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) scored three of the nine goals and helped the Chargers to a 17-10 victory.

Lieberman added two assists in the game and finished with six goals for eight total points. LeGoff scored five goals and added one assist. Laura McLean (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue Point) and Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie) each added two goals. Lieberman and Kristine Lambracht (White House Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central ) both grabbed five draw controls, while LeGoff added four.

Goalkeeper Marueen Spellman grabbed 11 saves and allowed 10 goals.

The Chargers out-shot the Yellow Jackets 32-24 and grabbed 20-of-29 draw controls. The Chargers were also successful on 13-of-17 clear attempts.

The Chargers will return to action in the quarterfinal round of the 2010 Northeast-10 Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship on Wednesday, May 5 against the third seed. Merrimack College or Southern New Hampshire will earn the third seed and host the Chargers on Wednesday. More details on the quarterfinal round will be available at the conclusion of the conference season this weekend.
