COLCHESTER, Vt. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated Saint Michael's College 12-11 Saturday afternoon in Vermont. With the win, New Haven improves to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
The nationally ranked no. 10 Chargers jumped out to a 2-1 lead, but the Purple Knights quickly answered and rattled off five straight goals to take a 6-2 lead with 7:21 left in the first half.
Carolina Marrero (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) ended the Purple Knights' streak with her fourth goal of the season at the 3:58 mark. St. Michael's added three more to take a commanding 9-3 lead with just over one minute left in the first half. The Chargers managed to net two goals in the final 20-seconds of the first half to cut the Purple Knights' lead to 9-5 at the break.
UNH carried the late first-half spark into the second half as they outscored the Purple Knights 7-2.
Laura McLean (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue Point) scored her second of the game and 13th of the season in the first 45-seconds of the second half, while freshman
Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) netted her seventh of the season with 22:25 left. St. Michael's added one with 20:40 left in the second half to take a 10-7 lead. UNH then went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-10 lead with 3:36 remaining. Curry scored the Chargers tying and go-ahead goal, while
Sarah Magnone (Yardley, Penn./Villa Joseph Marie) netted the Chargers' 12th goal. The Purple Knights added one with 1:51 left and cut the UNH lead to just one. The New Haven defense then held on, fighting off two shots, including one save by goalkeeper

Natalie Lieberman (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) each scored three goals for the Chargers. Lieberman added an assist, while
Sarah LeGoff (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) handed out two assists. Magnone and McLean each finished with two scores, while Magnone also recorded an assist. Marrero added the game with two goals. Spellman recorded 14 saves for the Chargers, none greater than the one with 1:19 left in the second half.
The Chargers were called for 19 fouls, compared to six on the Purple Knights. The Chargers were also on the losing end of draw controls, 14-11, and ground balls, 18-14.
This week the Chargers return to action on Tuesday, April 6 when they host Assumption College at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 4 p.m. UNH travels to Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday and hosts Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon.
