WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s soccer team was defeated by No. 11 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce in overtime on Friday evening in Rindge, N.H. After a regulation dominated by defense, the Ravens found the back of the net early into the extra time for the 1-0 victory. With the loss, the Chargers dropped to 1-2 overall and are now 0-1 in Northeast-10 Conference competition.
In the first 45 minutes of action, neither team was able to muster an attack that would result in a goal. Franklin Pierce controlled a 4-3 advantage in shots, but the Chargers were right there offensively, earning the lone corner kick in the half.
After halftime, once again the game portrayed a strong defensive effort from both squads. Junior goalkeeper Kim Taylor registered a game-high five saves, frustrating last year’s NE-10 leading offense. After the second 45 minutes came to a close, bonus soccer was needed to determine a winner.
Unfortunately for the Chargers, just 28 seconds into overtime, junior Amanda Panaro netted her fifth goal of the season, ending New Haven’s upset bid. The Ravens moved to 3-0 overall on the season, 1-0 in the Northeast-10.
New Haven did not surrender a corner kick and obtained two on the offensive end. The Ravens did manage a 12-7 advantage in shots for the game. Freshman Monica Yanez led the attack with two shots on goal.
New Haven returns to action on Sunday, September 12th when they play host to Merrimack College at Kayo Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
