With the result, the Chargers improved to 3-3-2 overall on the season, 2-2-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The hosting Hawks moved to 2-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the league.
Defense was the name of the game in the first 45 minutes of action, as neither team was able to generate the contest’s first goal. New Haven grasped a slim 7-6 advantage in shots and earned four corner kicks, but could not beat the Hawks’ goalkeeper.
Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) finished with five saves in the first half, keeping the game knotted up at 0-0.
The second half featured more offense, but once again ended with goose eggs on the scoreboard. New Haven mustered 13 shots and six corner kicks, but the Saint Anselm defense would not break. On the other side of the field, Taylor was strong again and able to hold onto the shutout after 90 minutes of play.
After a scoreless opening 10 minutes of extra time,
Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) and
Meabh De Burca (County Galway, Ireland/Nat. University of Ireland-Galway) nearly put the Chargers in front. However Yanez had her attempt saved by Jacqueline Cooney, while De Burca’s shot sailed wide to the right.
Kim Taylor has put together a very strong stretch between the posts, recording a season-high 10 saves for her fourth consecutive shutout. Jacqueline Cooney needed to make nine stops for the Hawks.
