Men's Soccer Suffers Tough 2-1 Loss in NE-10 Opener

WALTHAM, Mass. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team lost 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Bentley University. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 0-1-1 overall and 0-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Falcons improve to 2-0 and 1-0 in the NE-10.

The Falcons opened scoring in the first half off a 12th minute goal from Weston Zeiner who netted his first of the season from the top of the 18-yard box. The Chargers answered 11-minutes later when Gui Dos Santos (Curitiba, Brazil/Bethel (Conn.)) scored his second of the season. Dos Santos scored the unassisted goal after picking off a Falcons pass and riffling a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. UNH recorded three more scoring opportunities in the first half, while Bentley had two scoring opportunities, including a penalty kick. In the 36th minute, the Falcons were awarded a penalty kick after a New Haven foul inside the box. Bill Nussdorfer's shot was saved by UNH goalkeeper Jonathan Creem (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck ) to keep the game tied at 1-1.

The Chargers held an 8-7 advantage in shots in the first half, but Bentley led 5-0 in corner kick attempts. Both keepers stopped four shots in the first half, while New Haven was called for two more fouls than Bentley.

The game's deciding goal was scored in the 47th minute when Zeiner beat Creem for the second time in the game. Creem had another four saves throughout the second half to keep the Chargers within striking distance. Dos Santos had another scoring opportunity in the 70th, while Hector Pommills (Bridgeport, Conn./Kolbe Cathedral) was the last Charger to attempt a shot in the 79th minute.

The Chargers had one more opportunity with 12-seconds remaining when the Chargers game-tying goal off a free kick outside of the box was called off because of a foul.

UNH finished the game with a 14-12 advantage in shots, while the Falcons led 9-3 in corner kicks. Creem tallied eight saves and Bentley stopped six shots. Fouls were even at 20-20.

Dos Santos led the team with four shots and two shots on goal. Pommills added three shots, two on goal, and Bjorn Hansson (Landskrona, Sweden/Allvar Gullstrandsgymnasiet) and Steven Gennuso (Middletown, Conn./Xavier ) each added two shots.

The Chargers will return to action on Wednesday, September 8 when they host Assumption College in another Northeast-10 Conference showdown. Game time at Kayo Field is set for 4 p.m. Live stats, audio and video will be available online for the game.
