WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Emily Buckley-Matura and the University of New Haven women’s soccer team put on an offensive clinic on Sunday afternoon, as the Chargers defeated Post University by the final score of 12-1 at Kayo Field. With the win, UNH remains unbeaten against the Eagles all-time, now victorious in their last five meetings.
The action picked up early on in the first half when junior Ali Espanol found the back of the net from the left side of the field. Espanol sent the ball high into the air that sailed through the goalkeeper’s hands and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Less than one minute after that, Buckley-Matura began her scoring parade with two goals in a span of five minutes. The first one came off of a cross from freshman Monica Yanez, which Buckley-Matura calmly placed into the side of the net. Some four minutes later on nearly an identical play, Shannon Morales found a dashing Buckley-Matura, putting the Chargers in front by the score of 3-0.
The Chargers added to the lead two minutes later, when Lauren Primovic sent a perfect pass through the Eagles backline. Yanez received the ball and slipped a shot passed the Eagles’ goalkeeper, extending the lead to 4-0.
Holly Dawson tallied the next two goals for UNH, her second one, a long shot from well beyond the 18-yard box. Buckley-Matura and Tami Vargas assisted Dawson on the goals. Buckley-Matura and Lucy Francisco capped off the scoring summary in the first half, with goals in the 22nd and 27th minutes of play.
After the brief intermission, the Chargers continued to pour it on in the second half. In the 56th minute, junior Mary Kitsis put the Chargers back on track, recording her first goal of the season. Vargas collected her second assist of the afternoon on the play. Freshman Jordan Lipner-Riza then registered her first collegiate goal in the 59th minute, followed by one from Vargas in the 68th minute. Lipner-Riza concluded the scoring for the Chargers in the 76th minute with her second goal of the match.
Despite surrendering a goal late in the game, the Chargers’ defense was stellar. Kim Taylor recorded two saves in her first win of the season, while Elizabeth Johnson made seven saves for the Eagles.
New Haven returns to action on Friday, September 10th when they travel to Rindge, N.H. for its conference opener against Franklin Pierce. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
