RINDGE, N.H. – Sophomore Jeremy Williams of the University of New Haven men’s basketball team registered a team-best 13 points on Tuesday night, but the Chargers dropped a four-point decision at Franklin Pierce. The final score was 50-46 at the Fieldhouse on the campus of FPU.
With the loss, the Chargers fell to 3-10 overall on the season and 2-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Franklin Pierce improved to 5-10, 3-7 in league play.
The opening 20 minutes of action featured a back and forth battle in which neither team opened a lead of more than four points. The Chargers controlled a slight advantage in the first half, as the away team took a mere three point lead, 21-18, into the locker room. Robert Jamerson picked up where he left off last game, as the senior forward led the way with six points in the first half. Sophomore Sean Harris also added five points for the visiting Chargers.
After the break, Franklin Pierce regained control of the game with a 14-7 run through the first nine minutes. However, Ashanti DePass put an end to the run with a big three-point basket that cut the Chargers’ deficit to just one with 10:06 remaining in regulation.
Through the next six minutes, the teams went basket for basket, a stretch that included six lead changes. With 3:35 showing on the clock, Jamerson put the Chargers in front with a bucket underneath, granting UNH a 44-43 lead.
Unfortunately, that would be the Chargers last lead of the game as the Ravens would close the game on a 7-2 run. UNH missed its final six shots from the floor, including two free-throws. The Ravens made 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the waning minutes to solidify the victory.
Williams finished the game with 13 points to lead all UNH uniforms. He concluded the game 5-of-9 from the floor, including three from behind the arc and five assists. Jamerson added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Harris accumulated eight by the night’s end.
UNH held the Ravens to just 19 percent shooting in the first half and 28 percent for the game. Each team turned the ball over 15 times, but Franklin Pierce held a clear advantage on the boards, 41-30. The Ravens also had 10 more free-throw attempts than the Chargers.
The Chargers return to action on Sunday, January 16 when they play host to Stonehill College at Charger Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
