RINDGE, N.H. – Freshman Anh-Dao Tran registered a game-high 15 points on Tuesday afternoon, but the University of New Haven women’s basketball team was defeated by Franklin Pierce at the Fieldhouse on the campus of FPU. The Chargers jumped out to a quick lead but failed to maintain the advantage, eventually leading to a 79-58 loss on Tuesday evening.
With the loss, the Chargers descended to 2-12 overall and 1-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Recently receiving votes in the latest NCAA Division II Coaches’ Poll, the Ravens improved to 11-5 and 7-3 in league competition.
The game started out well for the Chargers, as they opened a seven point lead, 14-7, just five minutes into the contest. UNH carried the advantage all the way until the midway mark before Franklin Pierce took control. A three-point basket from Brittany Martelle sparked a 33-12 run to close out the half for the Ravens, as the home team carried a 50-30 lead into halftime.
After the break, the Chargers fought vigorously to cut into the deficit but could never ignite a run to do so. The Ravens opened a large lead and coasted to a comfortable conference victory.
New Haven shot only 30 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 25 times. Franklin Pierce scored on 50 percent of its shots and controlled the boards with a 44-31 margin. In addition, the Ravens’ bench recorded nine more points than the Chargers’ bench.
Tran carried the load offensively, tallying 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists for UNH. Ayana Duncanson also registered double-figures with 11 points and seven boards, while Audrey Cunningham knocked down three from downtown for nine points. Lauren Boivin added eight points and three rebounds.
Four members of the Franklin Pierce squad finished with double-digits on the night. Martelle led the way with 14 points, Jewel White added 13 and Lekia Cowen and Marielle Giroud each recorded 12 in the victory.
The Chargers return to action on Sunday, January 16 when they play host to Stonehill College at Charger Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
