The opening 20 minutes of action featured a defensive standoff and a low scoring affair. After a slow start, UMass Lowell grasped the first substantial lead of the game with a 9-2 run around the midway mark. The River Hawks increased their lead to double-digits with five minutes remaining but failed to maintain the margin. Robert Jamerson and Justin Exum knocked down back-to-back buckets in the closing seconds, leaving a six-point deficit, 30-24, at halftime for the Chargers.
Jamerson provided much of the offense for New Haven in the first half as the senior forward recorded 11 points and two rebounds. Exum added four points and five rebounds and Ashanti DePass connected on one from downtown.
After the break in action, both teams came out of the locker rooms on fire, accounting for 20 points in just over four minutes of play. Jamerson began the parade for the Chargers with a basket underneath, followed by eight straight points from Exum.
However, Antonio Bivins and Romeo Diaz were too tough for New Haven in the post. UMass Lowell opened up a 14 point lead with 11:46 left in the game, an insurmountable deficit for the Chargers to overcome.
Diaz poured in 16 points, all in the second half, while Bivins added 14. As a team, UMass Lowell connected on 51 percent of its shots and out-rebounded UNH, 34-22, nine coming on the offensive end.
Jamerson led all scorers with 17 points (7-of-8) and pulled down six boards for the Chargers. Exum finished with 16 points and six rebounds, while Jeffery Adkins and Jeremy Williams scored five and four points respectively.
The Chargers return to the hardwood on Tuesday, January 11 with a Northeast-10 Conference showdown against Franklin Pierce. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Rindge, N.H.
