Women's Soccer Suffers Overtime Loss at Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team lost 1-2 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Saint Michael's College. The Chargers dropped to 7-8 overall and 5-8 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while the Purple Knights improved to 6-9-1 overall and 5-8-1 in conference play.

The opening half Saturday began with back-and-forth play as both teams controlled possession and recorded shots on goal in the first 20 minutes. In the 16th minute, Kim Taylor made a save to keep the game tied at 0-0. The Charger then broke the tie in the 17th minute as Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) netted her sixth goal of the season from ten yards out. She received a pass from Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) and then put the ball over the head of the Purple Knights' goalkeeper. St. Michael's recorded two more shots in the first half, but the Chargers held strong and led 1-0 at halftime.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, the Purple Knights tied the game. Katie Butler scored in the 57th minute to knot the game at 1-1. In the final 33 minutes, both teams recorded numerous opportunities, but 90 minutes passed and the teams headed to overtime.

In the overtime period, the Purple Knights tallied the only four shots. Butler fired two shots wide in the 93rd and 95th minutes, while Annie O'Gorman took one shot on goal in the 98th minute. Saint Michael's eventually netted the game-winning with 57-seconds remaining in overtime.

Simms led the Chargers with two shots, including one on goal. Four other Chargers also recorded shots in the loss. Taylor made nine saves between the posts for UNH.

New Haven will return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 26 when it travels to Adelphi University. The match is set for 4 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.
