WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team swept Assumption College, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-13), Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium. With the win, New Haven improved to 9-4 overall and 5-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Assumption fell to 4-14 overall and 0-7 in the Northeast-10.
The Chargers and Greyhounds played close through the opening 14 points, but a Greyhound error sparked a UNH 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. New Haven would hold on to the lead through the rest of the opening set and the Chargers led by as many as 10 points, 24-14, later in the set. Assumption then rallied with five unanswered points before a Greyhounds' service error gave the Chargers a 25-19 victory in the opener.
The second set was played very even throughout. UNH took a 6-5 lead in the early going, but the Greyhounds stayed close, evening the score at 9-9. The teams played point-for-point to 17-17 and again at 18-18. An ace by
Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) put the Chargers up 19-18, while Elizabeth Akinibiyi added a kill to by the Chargers a two-point lead. UNH would not lose the lead through the final points and
Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy) gave the Chargers a 25-22 victory with the set's final kill.
The third and final set was all New Haven as the Chargers cruised to a 12-point victory.
Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif./Rowland ) served nine-straight points early in the set to give the Chargers a 10-1 lead to open the set. Assumption narrowed the lead to five points, 15-10, later in the set, but Jamie Levine sealed the victory with solid serving through the final seven points of the third set. Three consecutive blocks by
Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) and
Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton) concluded the set with a final score of 25-13.
New Haven was led by Candelaria who hit at a .462 clip. The junior posted 16 kills on 26 attempts with four errors. Candelaria also recorded eight digs in the win.
Kristy Atufunwa (Denver, Colo./Denver East) was second on the team with 10 kills on 19 attempts with four errors and a .316 hitting percentage. The freshman added two total blocks. Alpough haned out 37 assists and two aces, while
Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif./Rowland ) added 10 digs and four aces.
As a team, UNH recorded a .286 hitting percentage, 42 digs and seven total blocks.
