Women's Volleyball Continues NE-10 Win Streak, Sweeps Pace

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team swept Pace University 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 26-24) Tuesday night in its final regular season home match of the year. With the win, the Chargers improved to 20-5 overall and stayed unbeaten in the Northeast-10 Conference at 14-0. Pace fell to 18-9 overall and 8-5 in the NE-10.

The Chargers got right to work in the opening set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead behind serving from Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i/Kamehameha) and a pair of kills by Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton). The Setters eventually worked back into the set, going on a 10-4 run midway through the set to bring the score within three points, 21-18. After taking a 24-18 lead off a Pace error, the Chargers needed just one to seal the set. The Setters battled and scoed four straight before an Ane block gave the Chargers a 25-22 victory in the opener.

The second set was much closer than the first as the teams exchanged point for point. Neight team led by more than two points until the final point and the leads went back-and-forth. In total, their were 14 tied scores and seven lead changes in just the second set. New Haven held a slm 5-4 lead early, but the Setters earned a 10-9 lead after back-to-back points. Later, UNH took a 19-17 lead off a Pace attack error, but the Setters rebounded and evened the score at 21-21 after a UNH error. Kediy Candelaria made the difference down the stretch and put away two balls to seal a 25-22 victory for the Chargers.

In the final set, the Chargers scored the first two points, but it was the Setters who led for most of the early portion of the set. After tying the score at 4-4, the teams exchanged three-point runs and found the score tied at 7-7 six points later. Pace would gain a slight advantage and lead by as many as three, 13-10, before the Chargers rallied. UNH went on a 7-0 run midway through the set to take an 18-13 lead after back-to-back blocks by Alpough and Cannady. Pace then went on its own run and evened the score at 18-18. The Setters then gained momentum and led 23-22 before earning a set point off a UNH attack error. The Setters led 24-22 with the serve and Cannady put away her 13th kill of the night to bring UNH back within one. Margo Meteyer (Madison, Wis./Madison West) then hammered a kill for the Chargers' next point, tying the set at 24-24. A Setters' error followed by a block by Meteyer and Cannady gave the Chargers a 26-24 extra-point win in the final set.

Sophomore Cannady led the team with a .423 hitting percentage off 13 kills, two errors and 26 attempts, while also leading the team with seven total blocks. Candelaria added 18 kills and a .216 hitting percentage. Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) handed out 40 assists, while freshman Hayley Wilson (Denver, Colo./Overland) led the team with 17 digs.

The Chargers will conclude the regular season on Friday, November 4 when they travel to Bentley University. Match time in Waltham, Mass. is set for 7:30 p.m.
