Adelphi Defeats Women's Basketball 62-56 at Charger Gym

BOX SCORE

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Unviersity of New Haven women's basketball team fell 62-56 Tuesday night to Adelphi University at Charger Gymnasium. With the loss, New Haven dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Panthers improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The Chargers scored the first points of the game Tuesday and managed to hold on to the lead through the first nine minutes of the first half. UNH led by as many as four after a pair of Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) free throws with 14:12 on the clock. The Panthers evened the score at 10-10 before Schacker hit a three-pointer with 11:44 left. Adelphi answered with a 7-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 19-13 lead with 8:29 left in the first half. New Haven would narrow the Panthers' lead to two points in the final five minutes of the first half, but a 7-0 run to close the half but Adelphi up 32-23 at the break.

The Panthers opened the second half and improved their lead to double-digits, 37-25. The Chargers, however, did not quick and went on a 13-1 run over the next seven minutes to even the score at 38-38 with 12:23 left. Freshman Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) hit the tying three-pointer off an assist from Bria Moore. The game remained either teams' game until the final minute as Adelphi led by just three points, 56-53, with 2:15 left on the clock. A pair of missed jumpers in the final two minutes could not cut the lead under three points. With 47-seconds left, Adelphi took a five-point lead, but Audrey Cunningham (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) answered with a three-pointer to cut the lead to just two. In the final minute, the Panthers connected on 4-of-4 free throw attempts to seal away the win.

Offensively, New Haven turned the ball of 24 times and shot 34.4-percent from the floor. The Chargers were also out-rebounded 41-35, but held a slight 11-7 advantage in second-chance points.

Sophomore guard Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) led the team with 13 points, adding five rebounds. Freshman Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) led the team with seven rebounds, while adding 11 points. Schacker added in 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting.
