Chargers Hold On in Victory Over Greyhounds

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the University of New Haven men's basketball team to a 61-59 victory over Assumption College on Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers improved to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. The Greyhounds dropped to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play with the loss.

The game will be broadcast recorded on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) on Monday, December 5 at approximately 7 p.m.

The opening minutes of Wednesday's game was played close and neither team gained a large lead until the Greyhounds took a five-point lead at the 9:34 mark, 15-10. Assumption stretched the lead to six, 18-12, before the Chargers were sparked by a krystian Foriest (Bronx, NY/Wings Academy ) three-pointer with 7:39 left in the first half. The three brought UNH within three points and begane a 16-2 run to close the half for the Chargers. During the stretch, six different players scored and helped lead New Haven to an eight-point halftime lead, 28-20.

The Chargers held on to their early lead in the second half, but Assumption would close the gap after just five minutes. The Greyhounds evened the score at 32-32 with 15:04 left in the half and eventually took a small three-point lead after a 6-0 run. New Haven answered with scoring from a number of players to regain the lead for good at the 10:11 mark. Foriest hit another three-pointer to give UNH a 42-39 lead and the Chargers hit full stride from that point forward. UNH never lost the team and led by 10 points, 56-46, after an Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) three-pointer with 5:15 left. #Jeffery Adkins, Jr.# improved their lead to 59-48 with a non-traditional three-point play and the Chargers stayed ahead. In the final minute, Assumption hit a trio of three-pointers to bring it close, but a jumper from Adkins down the stretch sealed the win.

The difference in Wednesday's game was the offensive glass. New Haven held a 39-34 overall rebounding advantage, but they also held an 11-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. The Chargers scored 12 second-chance points compared to just three by Assumption.

No other Charger besides Exum scored in double figures Wednesday, but seven other players scored at least five points. Ade Barek (London, England/West Catholic / Saint Petersburg College) led the team with nine rebounds, while addeing two blocks and one seal. Freshman Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) played well with five boards, including four offensive boards# and four points in just 13 minutes.

New Haven will return to action on Saturday, December 3 when its hosts Le Moyne College at Charger Gymnasium. Game time on Saturday is set for 1:30 p.m.
