Women's Basketball Suffers Loss to Nationally Ranked Assumption

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game, 68-76, to No. 17 Assumption College Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the loss, while the Greyhounds improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

The game will be broadcast recorded on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) on Monday, December 5 at approximately 8:30 p.m.

The Chargers scored the first two points on Wednesday and played shutdown defense for the opening six minutes. UNH went on to score the games first six points and held the Greyhounds scoreless until the 14:15 mark of the first half. The Chargers turned a 6-0 lead into a 12-5 lead and eventually took a 10-point 17-7 lead off an Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) jumper at the 8:52 mark. The Greyhounds were then sparked by a Sabrina Siciliano layup to go on a 21-9 run through the final eight minutes of the first half. The Chargers led 26-21 with 2:35 left in the half, but Assumption scored the final seven points to take a 28-26 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, New Haven evened the score early and took a three-point lead off a Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) three-pointer, but the Greyhounds took momentum. The led for most of the remained of the game, although the Chargers kept the score within five points a majority of the half.At the 5:50 mark Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) hist a three-point basket to bring the Chargers within two, 53-55, but the Greyhounds answered with a 6-0 run over the next 1:20 to regain the commanding lead. Down the stretch the Chargers were as close as six points and the Greyhounds led by as many as 10 points before take the eight-point victory.

The difference in Wednesday's game was UNH turnovers as the Chargers coughed the ball up 25 times, compared to just 10 by the Greyhounds. Assumption scored 29 points of turnovers, while the Chargers scored just 11 points off turnovers.

Four Chargers scored in double figures, while Tran led the team with 15 points. Moore chipped in 12 and nine rebouned, while Cruso scored 11. Ayana Duncanson (Elmont, N.Y./Francis Lewis) added 10 points and five boards. Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) also had a great night with eight points, eight rebounds,four blocks and two assists.

New Haven returns to action on Saturday, December 3 when it hosts Le Moyne College at Charger Gymnasium. The women tip off at 3:30 p.m.
