WALTHAM, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's volleyball team swept Bentley University 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) Friday night and claimed its fourth-straight Northeast-10 Conference Regular Season Championship in its regular season finale. With the win, the Chargers also concluded their fourth-straight undefeated NE-10 season with a 15-0 record and finish with a 21-5 overall mark. Bentley concluded the season at 12-15 overall and 7-8 in the NE-10.
In the first set, New Haven and Bentley exchanged points and eventually tied the set at 9-9.
Hayley Wilson (Denver, Colo./Overland) then sparked a Chargers' rally with an ace to give UNH a 10-9 lead. The Chargers scored five straight and took a 14-9 lead in the opening set. Bentley closed the lead to just one and then evened the score at 15-15. The Chargers went on another 5-0 run to take a 20-15 lead and cruised on to the 25-19 opening set victory.
New Haven jumped out to an early lead in the second set and took an early commanding lead by eight points, 12-4. Bentley closed the gap to three points at 16-13, but a 3-0 run by the Chargers kept them ahead. With a 19-13 lead, New Haven would surrender five straight to bring the lead within one point, 19-18, late in the set. The Chargers held on and back-to-back points off a Kediy Candelaria kill and another Wilson ace gave the team the 2-0 lead in the match.
The final set was all New Haven after taking a 10-5 lead early. The Chargers led by no fewer than three points throughout the set and went on to take a 25-18 victory off an
Elizabeth Akinbiyi (Miami Gardens, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna Prep.) kill which ended it.
Junior
Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Bayamon Military Academy) led the team with 15 kills on 28 attempts with only two errors for a team-high .464 hitting percentage.
Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton) added a .455 hitting percentage off six kills, one error and 11 attempts. She also made five total blocks in the match.
Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South / Western New Mexico Univ. ) handed out 28 assists, while also leading the defense with seven digs.
New Haven, who also earned the top seed in the NE-10 Championship with the win, will return to action in the NE-10 Championship quarterfinals on Tuesday, November 8 when they will host the opening round match. The Chargers will play UMass Lowell in the opening, quarterfinal match on Tuesday night. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium.
