BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore guard
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) scored a career-high 36 points on 11-of-15 shooting to lead the University of New Haven men's basketball team to a 90-62 victory over Molloy College Saturday afternoon. With the non-conference victory, the Chargers improved to 9-2 on the season and the Lions dropped to 4-8.
Exum connected on 8-of-11 three-pointers Saturday, while going 6-of-8 at the charity stripe. He added two assists, three steals and two rebounds. Classmate
Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) added 14 points and 10 assists for the double-double.
Ade Barek (London, England/West Catholic / Saint Petersburg College) also scored double digits with 11 points, while adding a team-high eight rebounds.
Exum hit a three-pointer off the opening tip-off and the Chargers never looked back. In the first 6:30, Exum led the Chargers on a 15-5 run, which was capped by an
Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) triple at the 13:30 mark. Five minutes later, Exum connected on back-to-back three-pointers to cap an 8-0 UNH run at the 8:55 mark of the first half. New Haven maintained a double digit lead down the stretch and would eventually take a 20-point, 36-16, lead with seven-second left in the first half. A desperation three-pointer from just over half court fell for the Lions as time expired and the UNH lead shrunk to 36-19 at halftime. Exum scored 20 of his 36 points in the first half, while connecting on five long balls.
In the opening minutes of the second half, the Chargers and Lions exchanged baskets. With a 19-point lead, 46-27, at the 16:06 mark, the Chargers went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to take a commanding 27-point lead. Molloy then began full court pressure and closed the lead down to as few as 12 points at the 7:27 mark. A three-pointer by Chris Lyons capped a 25-10 run for the Lions. UNH rallied and went on its own run over the final seven minutes of the game. The Chargers went on a 22-8 run to close the game and sealed a 28-point victory off a
Mark Palmieri (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) three-pointer with just over a minute left in the contest.
As a team, the Chargers shot 54.2-percent from the floor and 50-percent from downtown. New Haven out-rebounded the Lions 35-22 and recorded five blocks. The Chargers scored 27 points off turnovers and 18 second-chance points.
