BOX SCORE SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team defeated American International College 67-65 Tuesday night behind a 23-point performance from freshman
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career). With the win, the Chargers improved to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Yellow Jackets fell to 3-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
The Chargers and Yellow Jackets exchanged points in the early minutes of Tuesday's game, but by the 13:35 mark, AIC had opened a nine-point lead, 13-4. The Chargers later went on a 6-0 run to cut the Yellow Jackets' lead to three, 15-12, but again AIC answered. The Yellow Jackets went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes and led 25-12 with 6:34 left in the first half. AIC held on to the lead throughout the remainder of the first half, while
Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) hit a jumper at the buzzer to cut the UNH deficit to seven, 34-27, at the break.
After scoring the first five points of the half, AIC took a 12-point lead just over two minutes into the second half. New Haven began its come back over the next 10 minutes. A layup at the 9:18 mark from Moore sparked a 9-0 UNH rally and cut the Chargers' deficit to one point, 51-52. Four minutes later, Moore connected again from in the paint to put the Chargers ahead for the first time in the second half, 55-54. In the final minutes, the team's exchanged the lead, while an AIC layup with 55-seconds remaining gave the Yellow Jackets a 65-64 lead. The Chargers trailed and took back-to-back timeouts with nine seconds remaining in the game to set up the game-winning play. Tran then hit the game-winning basket off a layup with six seconds left. The sophomore was also fouled an converted on her free throw to give UNH a two-point lead. The Yellow Jackets final chance fell short as they turned the ball over with one second remaining.
Freshman Moore led the Chargers with a season-high 23 points. She also added five rebounds, two steals and one block to her game totals. Moore went 10-for-13 from the field and 2-for-3 from the charity stripe. Tran added 19 points to help lead the Chargers as well.
