BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s basketball team suffered a loss at Charger Gymnasium to the University of the District of Columbia, 65-61 on Thursday night. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 2-7 on the season, while the Firebirds improve to 7-0.
The Chargers jumped out to a quick 11-2 advantage through the first four minutes with
Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) scoring nine of the first 11. The lead was the Chargers' largest lead of the game. The Firebirds kept chipping away at the Charger lead throughout the first half; taking their first lead of the game on a jumper by Denikka Brent with 1:39 to play. UDC held on to a 32-31 lead at halftime.
Just 45 seconds into the second half the Chargers reclaimed the lead on jumper by Tran, making the score 33-32. An offensive rebound by
Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) pushed the Charger lead to three, 37-34, with 17:03 to play. A layup off the hands of Jasmine Rich with 7:23 to play regained the lead for the Firebirds and they held on to the advantage throughout the remainder of the game. UDC extended its lead to as many as nine with a free throw at the 2:10 mark. A late push by the Chargers cut the lead to four with a pair of free throws by
Audrey Cunningham (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) with seven seconds to play. The Firebirds would seal a 65-61 non-conference victory.
Three Chargers finished in double figures led by Tran with 20 points. Cunningham and
Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) added 13 apiece. Hayes added seven points eight rebounds and three blocks. Rykemia Stone came off the bench and added six points and eight rebounds.
The Chargers return to action this Saturday December 10 when they travel to Southern Connecticut State for the 'Unity thru Hoops' doubleheader, game time is set for 1:00 pm. The next home game for the Chargers is January 7 against Merrimack College.
