ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game 69-42 at the College of Saint Rose Wednesday night. Senior forward Dominique Stellmacher led the team with 17 points, while the Chargers fell to 2-22 overall and 1-19 in the NE-10 this season. The Golden Knights improved to 18-6 overall and 14-6 in the conference with the win.
The Chargers and Golden Knights played to an early 5-5 tie, but Saint Rose took the game over with a 14-0 run during a four minute stretch. Five turnovers and a handfull of missed shots put the Chargers into the 14-point hole. Stellmacher snapped the scoring droubt with 12:48 left in the first half, cutting the score to 19-7. The Golden Knights stayed ahead by double figures throughout the first half and held 15-point, 37-22 lead at the break.
Stellmacher scored 11 points in the first half, while Audrey Cunningham was second on the team with six points. UNH struggled with 12 first-half turnovers and a 38.9 shooting percentage.
Saint Rose went on another run, 13-0, to open the second half and took a commanding 50-22 lead just over four minutes into the half. Four minutes later, the Chargers had rallied and closed the gap to 21-points, 52-31. The Golden Knights then cruised to lead by as many as 31-points down the stretch to take the victory.
The Chargers turned the ball over another 12 times in the second half and shot just 28-percent from the floor. Stellmacher led the Chargers with 17 points, while Ayana Duncanson led the team with 11 total rebounds. Lauren Boivin and Cunningham each finished with seven points in the loss.
New Haven returns to action in its final road game of the 2010-11 season on Saturday when they travel to Pace University. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. in Pleasantville, N.Y.
