BOX SCORE Box Score

WOCESTER, Mass. – Led by Natalie Lieberman, the University of New Haven women’s lacrosse team used a balanced attack that featured four players with three or more goals, as the Chargers knocked off Assumption College, 17-7, at Multi-Sport Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Lieberman spearheaded the offensive effort with four goals, improving New Haven to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

The Chargers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead behind goals from Kristina Curry and Lieberman before the clock struck three minutes. However, Stefanie Pagnois answered with a pair of goals for the Greyhounds, followed by a go-ahead goal at the 22:43 mark.

New Haven battled back with consecutive goals from Carolina Marrero and Alexis Gabbe to regain the lead, but then surrendered another Assumption tally. With five minutes remaining in the first half, the score was tied up at 4-4.

Nonetheless, in the closing minutes, New Haven mustered four straight goals to take a 8-4 advantage at the break. Marrero, Sarah Magnone (2) and Lieberman recorded the goals, as UNH grasped a comfortable lead before the intermission.

After the pause in action, UNH picked up right where they left off and registered the next four goals of the contest. Gabbe scored the first one, was followed by goals from Lieberman and Ashley Ferrandiz and Magnone capped off the rally with her second goal of the game for a 13-5 lead.

The eight goal cushion was more than enough for the Chargers defense, as the team coasted to a 17-7 victory. Lieberman, Ferrandiz (2) and Lisa Barnard closed out the scoring summary en route to the squad’s second triumph on the road.

Maureen Spellman was terrific between the pipes, making seven saves on the afternoon. In addition to Spellman, as a collective unit, the Chargers recorded more shots (35-21), draw controls (15-11), ground balls (30-27) and caused turnovers (12-9).

The Chargers return to the field of play on Saturday, March 26 with a home game against Merrimack College. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Kayo Field.
