Late Rally Not Enough as Women's Lacrosse falls 15-14 to Merrimack

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team rallied from a late three-point deficit, but could not over take the visiting Merrimack College Warriors Saturday afternoon. New Haven fell 15-14 and dropped to 3-2 overall, 1-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Merrimack improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in NE-10 play.

After surrendering the first goal, the Chargers scored three unanswered goals to take the lead. The Warriors answered and evened the score at 3-3 five minutes later. The Chargers would regain the lead with 16:10 left in the first half when Alexis Gabbe scored her second goal of the day. She also gave the Chargers a 5-3 lead at the 16:10 mark. UNH would hold on to its lead throughout most of the first half. Merrimack evened the score at 8-8 with just four seconds remaining in the first half.

UNH opened the second half with two straight scored to take a 10-8 lead. Merrimack then went on a four-goal stree to take its first lead of the second half, 12-10 with just over 20 minutes left in regulation. The Warriors held on to the lead and took a 15-12 advantage with 3:42 left in the second half. In the closing minutes the Chargers' offensive pressure gave them two goals in under 30-seconds, cutting the Warriors' lead to 15-14 at the 2:09 mark. Ashley Ferrandiz managed one shot on goal for the Chargers in the closing seconds, but the Merrimack goal keeper recorded the save to secure the victory.

Alexis Gabbe led the Chargers with five goals and one assist. Sarah Magnone added four goals, while Ferrandiz added two scores and three assists. In the goal, Maureen Spellman led the Chargers with 13 saves. Sophomore Natalie Lieberman and Ferrandiz both grabbed six draw controls for UNH.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, March 29 when they host Southern Connecticut State University at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
