WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated Southern Connecticut State University 24-8 Tuesday afternoon at Kayo Field. Sophomore Kristina Curry led the Chargers with five goals, while junior Alexis Gabbe totaled a game-high seven points. The Chargers improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Owls fell to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
New Haven opened the first four minutes of the game with three unanswered goals to take an early lead. The Owls then scored three of the next four goals in a two minute window to cut the Chargers' lead to just one, 4-3. Natalie Lieberman then went on a three-point swing, scoring two goals and assisting on another to put UNH up 7-3. Curry added one mroe to give the Chargers a five-goal lead, 8-3. Southern Connecticut would hang around with two more goals before the midway point of the first half, bringing the score to 8-5 with 15:14 remaining in the opening half. New Haven would score the final six goals of the first half to take a commanding 14-5 lead at the break.
Another seven unanswered goals helped the Chargers open a 21-5 lead 18 minutes into the second half. The Owls scored three more goals between the 9:49 and 6:50 mark to bring the score to 21-8. New Haven then scored the game's final three goals to seal its fourth win of the season.
Sarah Magnone was second on the team with four goals, while also adding one assist. Lieberman and Marissa Fisher each added three scores. Senior Ashley Ferrandiz scored one goal, while handing out a team-best four assists. Maureen Spellman recorded three saves in all 60 minutes between the posts for UNH.
