WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s lacrosse team dropped a non-conference match-up to Dowling College by the final score of 13-7 on Thursday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the loss, the Chargers fell to 4-3 on the season. The Golden Lions improved their overall mark to 4-2.
The Golden Lions took advantage of a slow start from the hosting Chargers. Dowling scored 10 first half goals and kept New Haven off of the scoreboard, grasping a 10-0 lead at half time. Kelly Cefalu led the Golden Lions with four goals in the stanza. Natalie Lieberman recorded the lone shot on goal for the Chargers. Defensively, Maureen Spellman saved the four of the 14 shots she faced.
The Chargers came alive in the second half, sparked by a goal by Natalie Lieberman just over one minute into the second half. Kristina Curry added another goal less than a minute later as the Chargers cut the lead to eight, 10-2. Dowling score two before the Chargers scored five of the last six goals of the game. Curry and Lieberman each scored one more, while Alexis Gabbe scored two during the stretch. The Golden Lions would stall the Chargers in the closing five minutes and hold on for the 13-7 victory.
Gabbe led the team with three points. Ashley Ferrandiz recorded one assist, three ground balls and two draw controls, while Curry added three ground balls and two draw controls to her stat line.
