MANCHESTER, N.H. – The tandem of senior Ashley Ferrandiz and junior Alexis Gabbe combined to score seven goals on Saturday afternoon, as the No.13 nationally ranked University of New Haven women’s lacrosse team outlasted Southern New Hampshire University by the final score of 9-8 at Larkin Field. Kristina Curry’s tally with 1:52 left in the game proved to be the difference, granting the Chargers their fourth victory away from home.
With the win, UNH improved to 8-5, 6-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference and moved into fourth place in the standings. The Penmen dropped to 6-5, 4-3 in league play.
Ferrandiz and the Chargers mounted a quick lead in this one, as the senior midfielder recorded three consecutive goals for a 3-1 lead through 12 minutes of action. However, the Penmen boasted a four-goal rally to close the half, capturing a 5-3 lead at the break.
Less than a minute into the second stanza, Sarah Magnone inched the Chargers closer with her 34th goal of the season. Emily Mongeau answered with her third goal of the game, but Gabbe and the Chargers’ offense came back to life. Gabbe registered three straight goals in a 12-minute span, putting the away team back on top, 7-6.
SNHU’s Ashley Chu tied the game up for the third time on the afternoon with 11:51 seconds on the clock, when both teams went silent until the 3:12 mark. At that time, Gabbe scored her 54th goal of the season, followed by Curry’s tally just over a minute later for a 9-7 lead. The Penmen scored 20 seconds after the draw control, but the Chargers’ defense held strong in the final minute, solidifying a thrilling 9-8 triumph.
Junior goalkeeper Maureen Spellman made 13 saves en route to the victory for the Chargers, while Hannah Moriarty turned aside 17 shots. New Haven connected on 5-of-10 free position shots and forced 19 Penmen turnovers.
The Chargers will look for their fourth win in a row on Tuesday, April 19 when they take on No. 2 nationally ranked Le Moyne College. The Dolphins are currently tied for second place in the NE-10 standings. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Kayo Field.
