GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team fell 21-6 Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference game in New York. With the loss, the Chargers fell to 9-7 overall and 7-4 in the NE-10. Nationally ranked No. 1 Adelphi improved to 15-0 overall and 11-0 in conference play.
Adelphi, the nation’s top ranked offense, jumped out to an early lead in this one, scoring the game’s first three goals. Sarah Magnone got one back for the Chargers on a free position shot at the 21:42 mark, but the Panthers responded with a powerful offensive stretch. Adelphi found the back of the net eight straight times to close the opening stanza, as the home team captured an 11-1 advantage at the break.
After the intermission, New Haven recorded the next two goals of the game. Alexis Gabbe, ranked sixth in the nation in scoring, registered the first one - quickly followed by another tally from Carolina Marrero. With over 25 minutes to play, the Chargers’ upset bid was still intact.
However, Adelphi boasted off seven consecutive goals, granting the Panthers an 18-3 advantage. The Chargers scored three of the game’s final six goals, but couldn’t overcome their deficit. Magnone completed the hat trick with two more and Ashley Ferrandiz added her 21st goal of the campaign.
