Gabbe Ties Single-Game Record, Lifts Chargers to 18-13 Victory in Regular Season Finale

Chargers Earn Fifth Seed in NE-10 Conference Championship Tournament

MANCHESTER, N.Y. - Led by a record-tying eight goals from junior Alexis Gabbe, the University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated host Saint Anselm College 18-13 Saturday afternoon in its 2011 regular season finale. The Chargers improved to 10-7 overall and 8-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. They earned the fifth seed in this week's upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship as well. Saint Anselm's season comes to an end with a record of 4-10 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

The Chargers fell behind early in Saturday's regular season finale as the Hawks scored the game's first two goals. Alexis Gabbe then scored two of her own goals in in the span of 25 seconds to bring the game even at 2-2. The Hawks scored their third goal before Gabbe added two more to give the Chargers a 4-3 lead with 16:45 left in the first half. New Haven then scored another six unanswered goals, including two by senior Carolina Marrero to take a commanding 10-3 lead into half time.

Saint Anselm scored the first goal of the second half as well, bringing the score within six goals, 10-4. Gabbe added her sixth goal of the game with 27:16 left in the second half. The Hawks then went on a 3-0 run to cut the UNH lead to four goals, 11-7 with 19:24 left. Natalie Lieberman sparked a 3-1 run for New Haven and propelled the Chargers to a 15-8 lead. The Hawks would score five of the games final eight goals to cut the Chargers' lead to five in the closing minutes.

Gabbe scored her 68th goal of the season in the final three minutes. The score was the eighth of the game for the junior who became New Haven's single-season record holder for the Chargers as well.

Sarah Magnone and Kristina Curry each added three goals, while Marrero finished with two. Magnone also led the team with four draw controls. Maureen Spellman earned the victory between the posts for UNH. The junior recorded 12 saves in 60 minutes.

The Chargers will now travel to the fourth seeded Merrimack College Warriors in the opening quarterfinal round of the NE-10 Championship on Wednesday, May 4. Game time in North Andover, Mass. is set for 4 p.m.
