BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Junior Alexis Gabbe tied a season-high with six goals on Wednesday afternoon, as the No. 14 nationally ranked University of New Haven women’s lacrosse team clashed with the No. 6 nationally ranked C.W. Post Pioneers at Hickox Field. The Chargers neared the upset bid, but dropped a heartbreaking 11-10 decision in the non-conference showdown.
The loss suffered by the Chargers dropped the squad back to the .500 mark at 5-5 for the season. The Pioneers improved to 5-1 on the campaign.
C.W. Post opened the scoring column in the third minute of play and then proceeded to tack on two more by the 10 minute mark. Sarah Magnone put the Chargers on the board with 19:43 remaining in the first half, but was followed by back-to-back goals from the home team for a 5-1 Pioneers advantage.
However, the four goal lead would be the largest of the game, as the UNH comeback commenced. The Chargers tallied four of the half’s final five goals to cut their deficit to just one at the sound of the halftime whistle. Gabbe recorded three of them and Marissa Fisher collected her fifth goal of the season, leaving New Haven trailing 6-5 at the break.
After the intermission, the Chargers continued their surge and registered the next three goals of the game. Ashley Ferrandiz opened the stanza with her 16th goal of the season, Magnone collected her second of the game and Gabbe added another for an 8-6 lead.
The Pioneers answered with four of the next five goals, leaving the home team with a 10-9 advantage with 11:19 left on the clock. Some four minutes later, Gabbe erased the deficit with her 39th goal of the season, tying the game up at 10-10.
The teams fought vigorously for the game-winning goal down the stretch, and unfortunately the Pioneers found the tally. Nan Mayott’s 13th goal of the season with one second remaining proved to be the difference, handing the Chargers a devastating loss on the road.
Gabbe finished with three draw controls to go along with the double hat trick. Magnone added two goals and three ground balls; Ferrandiz recorded a goal, three ground balls and one draw control, while Fisher registered one goal and one ground ball.
Goalkeeper Maureen Spellman stopped 10 of the 28 shots she faced for the Chargers. The Pioneer keeper, Dominique Mosca, also made 10 saves on the afternoon.
The Chargers return to action on Sunday, April 10 with a home game against Bentley University at Kayo Field. The game will begin at 1 p.m. with all of the action available at www.NewHavenChargers.com.
