Women's Lacrosse Season Concludes in NE-10 Quarterfinals, Warriors Defeat Chargers 13-9

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team fell 13-9 Wednesday afternoon in the quarterfinal game of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. The Chargers' conclude the 2011 season with a 10-8 overall record. Merrimack improved to 12-6 and will advance to take on Adelphi University in the semifinal round.

Alexis Gabbe opened scoring just over four minutes into the first half. Just over three minutes later, Merrimack answered and evened the score at 1-1. With 21:11 left in the first half, Gabbe scored her 70th goal of the season. Sophomore Natalie Lieberman gave the Chargers a 3-1 lead off an unassisted goal with 14:25 left in the half. The Warriors would then cut the lead back to one at 3-2 before Gabbe netted her third of the game to give UNH a 4-2 lead. Merrimack scored two more goals in the closing minutes to even the score at 4-4 at the conclusion of the half.

Gabbe and Sarah Magnone scored a pair of goals to open the second half for the Chargers, giving UNH a 6-4 lead with 26:42 remaining. The teams then exchanged goals, including one by Ashley Ferrandiz to bring the score to 7-5. With 22:09 left in the second half, Merrimack cut the Chargers’ lead to 7-6. With 13:03 left in the half, Merrimack evened the score at 7-7 before going on a 5-0 run to take a 12-7 lead with 8:49 left in the second half. Gabbe scored her 73rd of the season with 4:32 left in the second half, breaking the Warriors 7-0 streak. She brought the score within three, 12-9, with another unassisted goal at the 3:09 mark. Merrimack added one in the final minutes to secure a 13-9 victory.

Gabbe finished the game with a game-high six goals, while Magnone, Lieberman and Ferrandiz each added one. Goalkeeper Maureen Spellman recorded 12 saves, while Lieberman led the team with five draw controls.

In the 2011 season, Gabbe recorded a new UNH record 74 goals.
